“I am afraid I will miss a rule, choose the wrong plan or bring the wrong documents.”

The Marketplace (ACA), explained without the jargon

The Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA, often called Obamacare) is where individuals and families without employer coverage can buy a health plan and, depending on household income and size, may qualify for financial help. To enroll you generally need to be lawfully present in the United States. SimpleCare Insurance is a licensed independent agency in Miami — not the Marketplace and not a government agency — and our agents compare available plans with you, in English or Spanish, at no cost.

What the Marketplace is (and what it is not)

The Marketplace lets you compare private health plans available where you live. You can review monthly premiums, deductibles, provider networks and covered prescriptions before choosing.

SimpleCare Insurance is a licensed independent insurance agency. We are not the Health Insurance Marketplace®, HealthCare.gov, or a government agency. Eligibility for Marketplace coverage and financial help is determined by the Marketplace based on the information you provide.

A SimpleCare agent reviews those plan details with you and helps complete the application. The Marketplace makes the final decision about eligibility and financial help.

Financial help: you may qualify

Financial help is based on household size and expected annual household income. Depending on those details, you may qualify for an advance premium tax credit that reduces the monthly premium.

Some plans have a $0 monthly premium for applicants who may qualify for enough financial help, but plan availability, benefits and out-of-pocket costs vary.

Who can enroll

To enroll through the Marketplace you generally need to be lawfully present in the United States and not have access to other qualifying coverage; many lawfully present immigrants qualify for coverage and for financial help. Bring your immigration document and an estimate of your yearly income and we will check your eligibility together, free.

When you can enroll

The federal Open Enrollment window for the coming plan year runs Nov 1 – Dec 15. Outside it, a qualifying life event may open a Special Enrollment Period.

Dates may differ in states that run their own Exchange.

If your income changes

Tell your agent when your household income estimate changes so the Marketplace application can be updated. Keeping the estimate current can reduce surprises when the premium tax credit is reconciled on your federal return.

Questions about Marketplace coverage

Start with the questions clients ask most often about eligibility, timing, costs and plan details.

Can I get health insurance if I am not a U.S. citizen?

To enroll through the Marketplace you generally need to be lawfully present in the United States and not have access to other qualifying coverage; many lawfully present immigrants qualify for coverage and for financial help. Bring your immigration document and an estimate of your yearly income and we will check your eligibility together, free.

Can I get Marketplace coverage in Miami if I only have an ITIN?

An ITIN alone does not establish eligibility. To enroll through the Marketplace you generally need to be lawfully present in the United States and not have access to other qualifying coverage; many lawfully present immigrants qualify for coverage and for financial help. An ITIN is a tax number, and Simple Tax can file with one. Bring your immigration document and we will check together, free.

Is Obamacare the same thing as the Marketplace?

Yes. The Health Insurance Marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act is what people commonly call Obamacare; they are the same thing. SimpleCare Insurance is a licensed independent agency that helps you compare and enroll in those plans in English or Spanish. We are not the Marketplace and not a government agency.

How much does health insurance cost in Miami?

There is no single price. Your monthly premium depends on your household size, expected annual income, age, zip code and the plans available where you live, and you may qualify for financial help that lowers it. We calculate your real monthly number and out-of-pocket costs with you in the free appointment, before you choose.

When can I enroll in a health plan?

Open Enrollment for the coming plan year runs Nov 1 – Dec 15. Outside that window you can enroll if a qualifying life event opens a Special Enrollment Period, for example a move, marriage, new baby or loss of other coverage. Dates can differ in states that run their own Exchange. We can check your situation, free.

What counts as a life change that lets me enroll now?

Common qualifying life events include losing other health coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, and having or adopting a child. Certain changes in income or immigration status can also qualify. Each has its own deadline, usually 60 days from the event. Tell us what changed and when, and we will confirm whether a Special Enrollment Period applies.

My income changes every month. What income do I report?

Report your best reasonable estimate of the household income you expect for the whole year — for self-employment, income after business expenses. If it turns out different, tell us and we update the Marketplace application. Keeping it current reduces surprises when the premium tax credit is reconciled on your federal tax return.

Which insurance carriers do you compare?

We compare available health plans from Florida Blue, Aetna, Oscar, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare, plus dental and vision options from Delta Dental, Cigna and Solstice. Which carriers and plans you can choose depends on your county and your eligibility, so we check what is actually available at your address before recommending anything.
